Changes to the Admission Codes for E and L Dependents

Effective 31 January 2022, foreign nationals arriving in E and L dependent status will receive new admission codes on the I-94 Form. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (“CBP”) will admit spouses and children using the following codes. An E-1 spouse’s I-94 Form will show E-1S, and the child’s will state E-1Y. CBP will categorize an E-2 spouse as E-2S, and an E-2 beneficiary’s child as E-2Y. For an E-3 beneficiary, the spouse’s I-94 will indicate admission as E-3S for the spouse and E-3Y for the child. CBP will admit an L-1A or L-1B beneficiary’s spouse as L-2S and the child as L-2Y. As a reminder, E and L spouses now receive work authorization upon an immigration officer granting the spouse E or L dependent status.
